The geographical position of Niš made it strategically important and thus an attractive city for many conquerors. On several occasions, the city was occupied by Hungarians and Austrians. It was liberated from the Turks in 1878 and since then it has been part of Serbia again, with short interruptions during the First and Second World Wars, when it was under occupation. The influence of different peoples who lived in the territory of today’s city of Niš is noticeable in the city’s cultural heritage, primarily in its architectural diversity.
